Jamison's 2024 Turbo R Sport
The first matter of business is to understand the majority intended use and what the driver wants to feel out of their vehicle. This particular customer, Jamison, avidly trail rides East Coast parks like Windrock, Tackett, Black Mountain, and AOP. He loves tackling the hardest trails at each park, and he is always in a hurry to get to each one!
Goals:
- Vehicle stability, control, and support through double black diamond rock gardens, steep climbs, off-camber climbs, and big ledge drop-offs.
- Driver comfort is a must while blasting through blue and green trails!
Spring Kit and Internal Valving
Stage 1 (Spring Kit):
The first task for any new chassis and suspension platform is to dial in the spring kit. The springs not only support the vehicle's weight, but they also play a major role in supporting the vehicle through heavy impact events like unexpected washes and boulders.
*Over-sprung: The vehicle will ride very uncomfortable and can become unsettled through choppy conditions.
*Under-sprung: The vehicle will bottom out too easily and corner with uncomfortable amounts of body roll.
The first iteration gave us incredible ride comfort! However, we felt that it lacked in front bottom out control, so we increased the spring rate of the front lower (main) spring. With increased front spring rate and slightly quicker crossover ring engagement, the Turbo R was eating up the blue and green trails!
Stage 2 (Internal Valving):
The smoother ride that the spring kit provided the Turbo R resulted in the driver unknowingly maintaining a faster average speed. This is where the factory setting of the Walker Evans equipped Turbo R were lacking in suspension control.
The goal with internal changes are to balance keeping the performance characteristics the driver likes while also improving the characteristics that are lacking. With his fast paced driving style, we added high speed compression valving to support the vehicle through the hard hitting events, but we kept the low-speed shaft movements comfortable for those long days on the trails.
With more time in the car and more double blacks under his belt in the Turbo R, our fourth overall revision resulted in an increase to the rebound control on all four corners. This helped Jamison in two main scenarios:
The vehicle now stayed on its driven line during the east coast bump.
The vehicle stayed very planted and controlled after jumping a wash out or blasting through puddle whoops.
